Movie Review: The Heartbreak Kid

By PRyck
Ben Stiller is one of my favorite actors so I had to watch The Heartbreak Kid. Even though it was considered a bomb at the box office, I had to see if Ben Stiller really did bomb with this Farrelly brothers flick. My answer to that is mixed so read on.

The Heartbreak Kid is about Eddie Cantrow (Stiller) who has been a bachelor for pretty much all his life. Everyone around him is getting married and everyone is pushing him to find that special someone. The main person who is on his back about being single is his dad, Doc (Jerry Stiller). Doc is by far the funniest character in the movie with his foul mouth and always bashing his son, to bad he didn't appear that much.

Finally one day Eddie ran into a beautiful, nice and smart girl by the name of Lila (Malin Akerman). It seemed as love at first site with these two, then some bad news came. Lila was in some environmentalist group that was leaving in two weeks. She was chosen because she wasn't married and everyone else in this group was. Eddie and Lila have only known each other for about six weeks when this happened and they decided to take the plunge and get married.

They end up getting married and for their honey moon they decide to take a road trip down to Cabo. When I first heard this in the movie I automatically thought it was dumb to drive that long. It is such a long drive to Cabo anyone would hate anyone else in the car with them. The couple finally arrive and by this time Eddie absolutely does not like his newly wed wife.

One day out on the beach idiot Lila doesn't use real sunscreen and ends up getting a terrible sun burn. Because of this she stays in the room for the remainder of the honey moon and because of this Eddie meets with Miranda (Michelle Monaghan). They talk and chat and meet with Miranda's family and end up partying all night. After that Miranda and Eddie go on some Mexican excursions and have a few dates as well. By now you should see what is happening.

Both Lila and Miranda as well as Miranda's family find out what Eddie is up to and it becomes a big mess. Everyone leaves Eddie down in Mexico with no passports or anything. One day the idea pops into his mind to go find Miranda and express his undying love for her.

The Heartbreak Kid really was a bomb. The movie was predictable, funny only a few times and tried really hard to be funny, ultimately failing hard. Ben Stiller had some funny lines and there were some topless scenes as well. Like I said before though, the funniest stuff was from a character that rarely appeared. This movie is a "no brainer" and really isn't all that bad. Most will enjoy this, I did.
