Movie Review: 3:10 to Yuma

By PRyck
I thought I would leave 2007 with one of the best movies of the year to review, and it is 3:10 to Yuma. There hasn't been a good western movie since whenever the last Clint Eastern flick was. I was wary on 3:10 to Yuma because it wasn't getting a wide release and I couldn't see Russell Crowe as an outlaw cowboy.

Dan Evans (Christian Bale) is a struggling rancher on his way into the town of Bisbee. There has been a drought for many years and his family and cattle are struggling. On his way into town with his two sons he comes across a robbery of a bank stagecoach. This robbing is being done by the infamous Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) and his gang. Dan is confronted by Wade and his gang and is let off if he doesn't mention seeing anything.

When arriving into Bisbee the whole town is in a buzz looking for the outlaw Ben Wade. Dan and the sheriffs end up finding him and place him under arrest. By doing this they know that Wade's gang of ruthless killers will be out to free their boss, so they devise a plan on transporting Wade to a train that will take him to Yuma where there is a prison. Dan Evans ends up going because he needs the money and is one of the few with a good shot.

This journey to the train that departs at 3:10pm takes the group through many obstacles. All the while Ben Wade is conniving and sweet talking everyone, as well as killing off people. Along the way, both Evans and Wade begin to understand each other and respect each other to a certain degree. The transport makes it to the town where the train stops but whittled down to only Dan Evans and his son being the ones keeping Wade in custody. A huge shoot out ensues as well as a great ending.

3:10 to Yuma was a surprise to me. The movie was great and never once was drawn out or boring. The character Crowe portrays is one of the coolest villains in a movie. A great remake of a movie and a great modern day western to say the least. Much like Sweeney Todd, 3:10 to Yuma is one of 2007's best movies.
