Movie Review: AVP 2

Alien Vs Predator: Requiem is the second outing between two dying franchises (a nice way of saying they're not dead). For those who have seen the first Alien vs Predator, the sequel takes off where the first one ended, immediately after that moment a new alien comes bursting out of the dead Predator's abdominal cavity.

Immediately thereafter, the alien unleashes all sorts of dreadful havoc on the Predator ship, killing all of the crew and consequently causing the ship to land in rural Colorado. Meanwhile, a Predator sits on his throne on some distant planet, observing the onesided confrontatation between the Predator crew and the alien menace. Urked about his dead brethren, he takes off for earth, and commercially appealing carnage ensues.

I have to say that this movie was not blatantly terrible in the way you might expect. But there was an inexplicable blandness to the whole thing. You might say that, given the inherent cheese factor with these versus movies, it was not that bad, but it was definitely an empty experience watching it. Boring you might say. It's not that the plot was hard to follow (believe me, this was the last sort of thing to an be experimental film), but often times I found my mind wandering amidst useless territory, and I kept waiting for the movie to end.

Perhaps if the storylines hadn't been the expected combination (ex-convict at an uneasy peace with his lawmen friend, nerd who gets beat up by jock because the jock's girlfriend has the hots for him, returing soldier, etc.) it might have done a little something extra. It's hard to get involved with multiple characters and not really have just one character to invest. The more importance in one character, the more likely the movie has an engine to make it thrive and come to life. As it was though, this film was more like a loose connection of other functioning things than one single living thing that one might appreciate and love and whatever.

Even if you're not really into that, and just want to see loads of fight scenes and human collateral damage, it still doesn't really measure up. Maybe the coolest thing was seeing an intentionally unlikable character's face melt when acid dripped on him. And the skinned human of course.
