Movie Review: Atonement
The story centers around a young girl named Briony Tallis. A girl who's imagination is wild, she writes plays and books while vacationing in the huge family mansion in northern England, where this story is set into motion. She has an older sister by the name of Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knighley) also called "Cee."
A few years back Cee and the maids son, Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), had a thing together. Through the years Robbie was off in school the feelings never really left them. During this hot summer vacation the two rekindle what was once love. On the bad side of things young Briony has taken it the wrong way, mistaken the gentleman that Robbie truly is, as a sex addict. She comes to this conclusion with some misfortunate events, all of which Briony mistakes them for something else.
Because of this Robbie is accused for the wrong thing. He is sent to prison on false charges all because Briony mistook a series of events that in reality was love between her sister Cicilia and Robbie.
When war broke out Robbie had a choice, to stay in prison or fight in the army. He decides to join the army and was sent to Nazi occupied France. Him and two other army buddies got lost or misplaced, so they walked and walked to find a boat back home. They eventually come to the beaches where D-Day went down the night before the boats come to take the men home.
Robbie had promised Cee that he would come back and straighten things out once and for all and the two love and live which each other until end of days. This is where the movie becomes what I usually never say, but it becomes brilliant.
All through out Atonement you hear a type writer clacking away, typing something that you as the watcher don't know. It is a major hint and wonderfully done. The acting from all characters is great, the flash backs and going back and forth with the characters of Cee, Robbie, and Briony provide a movie that never gets dull.
I was beyond wrong on my first impressions of this movie. I wasn't able to sleep the night of watching it because it leaves one thinking. I know when a movie leaves a lasting impression on you like that it is one of a kind, a rare movie no doubt. The story is great and the ending is what knocks you out. (Seriously it leaves you in "awe.") Atonement is a great movie that all should watch and think about. I can honestly say, I loved this movie.
