Movie Review: Death Sentence

By PRyck
Kevin Bacon has always been good at the characters he chooses. With his last decent movie being in 2001 with Hallow Man it was time for Bacon to have another decent flick. With Death Sentence, Bacon finally churned out an above average movie. There was action, guns, cool music and of course revenge, I am a sucker for revenge movies.

Death Sentence is about a successful executive who has the perfect family and life. Nick Hume (Kevin Bacon) is liked by all and is the perfect family man. One evening upon returning home from his all star son's hockey game they needed to stop for some gas. While Hume was filling his car up with the liquid gold his son, Brendan Hume, went inside to get a drink. All the sudden cars pull up and guns are drawn. All the while Nick Hume is standing watching while one of the punks cuts his son down, eventually killing him.

This whole ordeal ends up to be a gang initiation ceremony, where a new member must kill someone in order to be in the gang. This infuriates Mr. Hume and while in court he decides to let the guy go instead of putting him away for five years. This begins the revengefulness of a grieving dad and a war.

Nick Hume tracks the man who killed his son down and ends up killing him. Not knowing that this leads the gang to full war on Nick Hume and his family. Because of this the gang sets out and kills Nick Hume's wife, Helen Hume (Kelly Preston), in front of him and putting his son Lucas in a coma. The gang leaves Nick and his family for dead, but they were wrong. Nick Hume survived and with him came a wrath to avenge his family. Nick sets out to eliminate the whole gang, with this comes some serious action and a whole lot of guns.

Death Sentence was actually surprising to me. Yes, there was the cornyness, mainly with the bad guys and how they were portrayed, but other than that this movie was cool. For some reason the music was some of the best I have heard in a movie and made you get pumped up and feel what the main character was feeling. I would recommend Death Sentence to anyone who wants to be entertained. When it comes to your family, any reasonable person would do what is done in this movie and thats why this movie is so good.
