Movie Review: The Kingdom
The Kingdom opens up with an innocent baseball game being played by American oil workers. A carefully orchestrated attack is being set up all at the same time. There is a decoy going around shooting random people then all the sudden a suicide bomber in the middle of the baseball crowd explodes. This is when Agent Fleury gets the call from a fellow agent in Saudi Arabia at the bombing scene.
After the phone call a separate explosion, this time a crap ton bigger in the middle of the emergency personal, killing hundreds and two American Agents. This prompts Agent Fleury to create a special team of investigators to go over and help the Saudis find the mastermind behind this. Fleury chooses Agent Sykes (Chris Cooper), Agent Mayes (Jennifer Garner) and Agent Leavitt (Jason Bateman) to come with him and try to find the terrorist mastermind. Upon arriving in Saudi Arabia the team is partnered with Colonel Ghazi and along the way befriends him.
Through out the movie the American team isn't allowed to touch anything or speak to anyone at the site where the bombing took place. This creates for some heated exchanges with some Saudis and for some comedy as well. Eventually Agent Fleury is granted access to everything which inevitably leads to the finding of the crazy terrorist guy.
When I first saw the previews I thought that The Kingdom was going to be some cheesy attempt to show what is going on in the middle east. After watching Jamie Foxx in Stealth thats all I could think of in my mind. To my surprise this movie was the exact opposite. A great tone through out and it really shed some light on the other side, the Islamic side of things as well. There is an intense gun fighting scene that was really awesome too.
Overall a good solid movie that will surely entertain you. It had some action, didn't have to think to much, and really showed another side of the Middle East. The opening credits are one of the cooler openings I have seen in a long, long time also. So when this movie gets on DVD you must check it out.
