Movie Review: The Nines
This movie is much like the cult classics of Donnie Darko and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, where it isn't at all a huge movie, but once released on DVD it will eventually get the praise it deserves. It is also like the two movies mentioned above, because there are so many ways to interpret this piece of work. Any theory could essentially be right, so I will go on explaining mine.
There is the lead of Ryan Reynolds. He plays three characters, Gary, Gavin and Gabriel. Gary is a big actor who is under house arrest, Gavin is a up and coming TV show writer, and Gabriel is a big video gamer creater. Apparently Ryan Reynolds character is a "nine." On a scale of one to ten, humans are sevens, kuwala bears are eights (They are telepathic.), creator types are nines, and God is a ten.
Ryan Reynolds is a lesser god who has created the three realities of Gary, Gavin and Gabriel. In the movie there is another "nine," Hope Davis. Davis plays Sarah, Susan and Sierra in each of the three created realities of Ryan. She is here to help Ryan who is the creator type who has a problem of living in his realities. Towards the end we see a glimpse of all the multiple universes that all "nines" have created which are under the control of God.
Thats a whole lot of theory for a movie, trust me, after it was over I had to think and get at least something from the premise. The concept is wonderful and provided for a different type of movie not seen in awhile. It made me think!
The Nines, as a movie was good. The concept is brilliant, but to me the actors didn't do the concept justice. I felt awkward watching Ryan Reynolds and Hope Davis. They never seemed to mesh well for me. Other than that this movie was great, much like Atonement it flew under my radar until watching it. I am glad I did because little movies such as this, are usually some of the best.
