Movie Review: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

By PRyck
I have always been "iffy" on musicals and movies that are musicals for that matter. The singing and acting never really made since to me. Just speak normal! So when I heard that Sweeney Todd the movie was a musical I cringed a little. Being that Johnny Depp is in it and that it is a Tim Burton film, I wasn't going to say no to it by any chance.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a mouthful to say, but a really cool title at the same time. Having never seen the play, I don't know how close this movie is with the play. I am guessing all the songs and music are the same with the majority of characters the same as well.

Johnny Depp plays Benjamen Barker, a barber who had the perfect life until he was wrongfully taken away from his wife and child. Upon arrival back in London there is no more Benjamen Barker, he is now Sweeney Todd. Todd is back for vengeance against the man who took his wife and child, Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman aka Snape). When back in London Todd goes back to his barber shop that is above a meat pie restaurant ran by Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter). Mrs. Lovett's restaurant is struggling but she is glad to see Todd.

After the initial shock of seeing Depp sing the story gets rolling. Todd begins to become the best known barber in London, all the while killing his customers. With all the killings Mrs. Lovett gets the idea to use the dead bodies as meat for her meat pies. Very disturbing but very funny at the same time. Todd is out to kill the judge and in the process kills someone very near to him with out knowing.

Sweeney Todd is an excellent movie and story. After seeing the actors sing and getting over the fact that it is a musical, this movie is very entertaining. It is also very bloody, the blood effects in this movie are really cool looking and disturbing. I never would have thought to see Snape sing before! Tim Burton and Johnny Depp make for a good duo and will provide for many great movies in the future. Over all a very good movie, easily one of the year's best.
