Movie Review: Sunshine

By PRyck
It has been a long time since a good sci-fi adventure movie has come out. I remember seeing a preview for Sunshine and was amazed. Cillian Murphy is an awesome actor and the thought of having to fly to the sun to save it was fascinating. The sad thing was that Sunshine never had a wide release in the theaters, therefore I never got to see it until now.

Set 50 years into the future (2057), Sunshine's whole premise is that the Sun is dying and because of that our beloved Earth is as well. Human beings have been trying to save the sun for awhile now with the first mission and voyage to the Sun named Icarus 1. This mission took place seven years before the setting of Sunshine (2050).

The goal of Icarus 1 and now Icarus 2, is to transport a huge dark matter bomb to the Sun, hopefully restarting the star and saving Earth and all humans. This mission failed when contact was lost a little after the half way mark to the Sun. With this failure came the second attempt to save the Sun called Icarus 2.

On board Icarus 2 are eight astronauts, all super smart with their own wisdom of certain things such as plant life, math, piloting etc. Among the team was the character of Robert Capa (Cillian Murphy), who is the expert on the dark matter bomb that will jump start the dying star.

Along the journey the team comes in contact with the first Icarus. They decide to stop and get some necessary equipment for the voyage back. With this decision the crew begin to make mistakes providing for some suspenseful sequence of scenes and possibly the failure to complete the mission.

Sunshine was a great movie and I am saddened that it didn't get the coverage it deserved. Cillian Murphy is a fantastic actor and in this movie he showed it well. The overall realism with the CGI of the space ship and what 50 years into the future looks like is awesome. For any person looking for a good sci-fi adventure flick please try Sunshine.
